During summer 2012, a few classmates were attending a networking barbeque and I jumped at the opportunity to join them. While I was at the event I began to fell naïve and oblivious to the professional world. Prior I felt my work experience, charisma, and education was sufficient. By the end of the day I felt as though my head was in the sand and had not seen all of the opportunities available to students. Deciding on a career path without performing the role brings a weight of uncertainty to students. Graduating without knowledge of the available paths and requirements to acquire employment is walking in senseless. My passion is helping students make connections, understand the technical competency, and build the soft skills expected when entering the complex business environment after post-secondary. Being an active part of the Douglas College Business Association, I acted as the eyes, ears and voice to the student body. Providing the resources, connections, and drilling in the importance of ongoing personal development and networking in the competitive environment - providing the solutions today for tomorrow’s post-graduate problems. Although you may have pictured me as an ostrich with my head buried in the sand, I am truly more of a phoenix. You see, I wasn't always what my friends have labeled as an 'keener' (although I have always been a workaholic who loves structure and stands for quality). It took time and life changing circumstances for me to truly value education. In secondary school I skipped more class than I attended and it took loosing my father in 2008 to push me to go to post-secondary (cannot wait until our 10 year reunion!). Once I was at Douglas, my instructors took me under their wings. There was a few lessons in tough love, however it was their mentorship that taught me to give back and get involved. Sometimes we have to learn things the hard way, or learn things for ourselves, but there are some mistakes that with information are 100% avoidable. This website is my personal hub of information, resources and experiences as I see it - I am continuously growing and learning and will try my best to keep it relevant. I hope the information is as useful for you as it has been for me! I am a bird of many feathers, and can only rustle a few in a short 2000 characters. I love making new professional acquaintances. Do not hesitate to reach out if you want to share experiences, talk business, personal development, or recommendations. |
