12 PERSONAL COMMANDMENTS
The Happiness Project
A few weeks ago I came across an article ” To Be Happier, Write Your Own Set of Personal Commandments” by Gretchen Rubin. The article is based on her New York Times best seller, the Happiness Project.
My twelve personal commandments:
1. Don’t get comfortable
Never settle, never stop evolving.
2. Two wrongs don’t make a right
If there is one lesson I will never forget from my Dad, this is it. It does not matter what actions someone has done to you; it is your character that decides how you respond.
3. Never neglect the hen that produces the golden egg
Core lesson I have learnt from Stephan Convey; kill the hen and you will have no more golden eggs. Take care of yourself.
4. You never learn anything talking, listen
I am shy initially however I can hold a conversation, sometimes a little too well. The first step to listening is shutting up (or simmering down if that is too harsh).
5. Fail faster to succeed faster
Mistakes happen; move forward, proactively.
6. You can’t make the leap of faith without walking the road of reason
I believe in following your gut however you have to do your due diligence.
7. Be miserable. Or motivate yourself. Whatever has to be done, it’s always your choice.
I love the tone of this. At one point, for a long stretch, I had four jobs, school, and volunteer. This quote was my constant reminder every time I felt like complaining. Remember you got yourself to where you are today. Today I hold eight core obligations... so not much has changed however by now this is embedded in my soul and attitude.
8. Think big, dream big
Never put restraints on your imagination.
9. To each their own
My most difficult circumstance or situation is of equal weight to another individual. To each of us it was the same amount of stress..
10. Smile, sunshine.
Somethings my Mom always said to me (my nickname was Sunshine). This always makes me remember the strength behind her smile.
11. Don't bite off more then you can chew. Your eyes are bigger than your stomach
To remind myself to be realistic. Especially when it comes to time. "No" used to not exist in my vocabulary. Which quickly brought me to my last commandment...
12. Efficiency is not equal to effectiveness
As per #7, think of the big picture when making your choices.
